Traversing Mount Hood along Timberline

Based in Portland, Shelly Renee Frank holds responsibilities with Kaiser Permanente as executive consultant of operations. With a passion for the outdoors, Shelly Renee Frank enjoys activities such as cycling, hiking, and backpacking when she has the chance. One of Oregon’s most popular destinations is Mount Hood, which encompasses the classic Timberline Trail traverse.

A 40-mile loop constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, the trail circumnavigates a rugged peak that rises to 11,240 feet. Despite the fact that it circles around, rather than climbing the mountain, the trail is far from flat, as the slopes of Mount Hood are ribbed with high ridges and deep valleys. There are several large rivers to ford, such as the Sandy, the Newton, the White, and the Zigzag. Some crossings are bridged, while other smaller creeks can be hopped across on rocks. Keep in mind that the challenge presented by any specific river or stream depends on snowpack, season, and the volume of water flow.

Other highlights of the Timberline Trail include old-growth Douglas fir cathedrals, expansive glaciers, and alpine waterfalls such as Ramona Falls. The volcanic pumice landscape at Cooper Spur contrasts with broad meadows filled with wildflowers in season at Elk Cove. Among the colorful flowers encountered are purple lupine, evergreen huckleberry, and western trillium.
